In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
