Social Media Content Creators Fueling Parallel Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unapproved slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Online

Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Followers are urged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users administering products of unknown origin.

Several experts stated the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Content Elimination

Based on the social media company, the service has removed violative content and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Activities

Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at residence.

Within minutes of entering one community, a seller shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Item Information and Pricing

Inside these communities, posts display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures

A representative for Telegram stated it regularly moderated dangerous content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not include what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially serious health risks”.
